Bottom line

Breville Duo Temp Pro left a very strong first impression, as we were testing the espresso machine for this Breville Duo Temp Pro review. With a sleek, stainless steel design, this semi-automatic espresso machine intrigues with its exterior appearance and in-built features. Though I feared the price at first ($$$$$), I understood the hype around the Duo Temp Pro as soon as I started to use it. The machine uses advanced technology (thermocoil and PID) for a perfect brewing temperature. Further, it brews heavenly coffee thanks to the pre-infusion technology. It soaks coffee grounds before brewing in order to gain rich and balanced espresso flavors. All in all, my family and I were in love with the results.

Why choose Breville Duo Temp Pro espresso maker over others?

In the following section of the Breville Duo Temp Pro espresso maker review, I would like to highlight what differentiates Duo Temp Pro from Breville BES840XL Infuser and other espresso machines.

From high level, Breville Duo Temp Pro comes with unparalleled technical advancements that other espresso machines don’t have. Those advancements include the digital temperature control function (PID). The PID controls the temperature of the water going through the group head. Further, it keeps water at the constant, perfect temperatures needed to brew creamy, great quality espresso.

The Duo Temp Pro espresso maker is quite similar to another Breville espresso machine, the Breville BES840XL Infuser, which we reviewed a couple of months ago. In essence, Duo Temp Pro espresso machine is a bit more basic than the Breville BES840XL Infuser (and thus, less expensive).

These two espresso machines have a lot of features in common.  Just as the Infuser, this Breville espresso machine uses pre-infusion technology. The pre-infusion process prepares coffee grounds for extraction. During this process, the grounds are slowly soaked with water while applying low, steady pressure on them. This allows the grounds to expand, and ensures that any gaps or cracks inside the puck will be filled.

Further, the Breville Infuser and the Breville Duo Temp Pro espresso makers have the following features in common:

  • more control over the temperature (thanks to the PID technology),
  • quick heating system known as the thermocoil,
  • hot water dispenser, and
  • swivel action steaming wand

However, Breville BES840XL Infuser comes with features that the Duo Temp Pro does not contain. Those include, for instance:

  • descale/clean indicator alert
  • dry puck feature
  • volumetric control function (for the perfect shot volume)
  • advanced temperature mode (for increasing or decreasing the temperature of the water according to the requirements of coffee grounds)

However, what sets the Duo Temp Pro apart is its ability to reduce the risk of burning coffee. Duo Temp Pro more quickly adjust temperatures between steaming milk and brewing espresso. It does so by running cold water through its system. This shortens waiting time considerably and prevents situations when the coffee could be burned by water that is too hot.

Who is Breville Duo Temp espresso maker perfect for?

As I was testing the product for this Breville Duo Temp Pro review, I really wanted to understand who would most likely fall in love with this product.

This espresso machine can most likely ignite the interest of those who are passionate about good coffee. Although I am not a professional barista, I feel like the Breville Duo Temp Pro is simple enough for me to use. In fact, I think this machine could be a perfect choice for people who want to learn more about brewing phenomenal coffee.

Breville Duo Temp is fairly easy to use, and provides wonderful learning opportunities. In addition to opportunities to impress family, guests and visitors.

You might find the following appealing about Breville Duo Temp espresso machine:

Very strong brand behind the espresso machine

An advanced espresso machine with high-end features and technical specs

Pulls high quality espresso along with wonderful espresso-based beverages

Simple enough to use, while offering a great opportunity to learn coffee baristing

Who is Breville Duo Temp Pro espresso maker NOT perfect for?

Just like with other coffee reviews, I would love to remain honest in this Breville Duo Temp Pro review. I think that there are a couple of examples where where Duo Temp Pro might not be a perfect choice:

Low budget

An espresso machine with the integrated coffee grinder (there are only a few such machines that are reliable)

A machine that is more advanced and requires much deeper understanding of coffee brewing

Do not care for more nuanced coffee flavors

Breville Duo Temp Pro espresso machine amazed me with its polished, elegant and clean look. With its stainless steel design, it made my kitchen more upscale. The Duo Temp Pro had a few controls, which were very intuitive and easy to use.

I was extremely excited about this Breville Duo Temp Pro review. When I received the espresso machine, I was amazed by its exterior appearance. It was clear to me that a lot of thinking and great design went into this coffee machine. It has an attractive stainless steel design that has the potential to upgrade the look of any kitchen.

Despite what the machine can accomplish, Breville Duo Temp Pro is smaller than a regular carafe or k-cup coffee maker. Further, it is a bit smaller than the Breville BES840XL Infuser. Therefore, if you’d like a very powerful machine that’s easy to use, but not too terribly bulky, Duo Temp Pro might be your best bet.

The group head in located in the front of the machine, flanked on each side by the milk frothing wand and by the coffee tamper. The removable water reservoir is located at the back of the machine. I was able to easily access it by pulling its handle upwards.

The control panel was fairly straightforward. It is located right on the top of the group head. It is clearly visible and easy to use.

  • 1 knob with two selection options between espresso and steaming/hot water. To select espresso, I need to turn the knob to the left. To select hot water, I need to turn the knob to the right.
  • 2 backlit buttons: the power button and the select button. The power button turns on/off the machine. The select button is in use only when the steam/hot water function is activated.
  • A cup warming tray to heat warm up a cup for a perfect shot of espresso.

Breville Duo Temp Pro offers an exquisite coffee experience. With its phenomenal feature set, I was able to brew coffee easily and conveniently, and enjoy coffee full of flavor, taste and richness. The espresso maker comes with advanced tech features: PID temperature control, thermocoil heating system, pre-infusion of coffee grounds and auto purge.

Voltage: Breville Duo Temp Pro is made for 120V, and can be used in Canada and the US only.

Basket size: The size of the coffee basket is 54 mm, and the machine comes with two single wall and two double wall filter baskets (single and double dose).

Beverage size: Breville Duo Temp allows me to adjust beverage volume. To brew, I had to turn the control dial to the “Espresso” position. Once enough coffee has been extracted, I had to turn the dial to a standby position, which stopped the flow of coffee. Breville recommends approximately 30 seconds of extraction, which should brew one shot of espresso.

Weight: Breville Duo Temp Pro is a heavy machine. It weighs about 18 lbs, because of its sturdy stainless steel structure. The machine needs to have a permanent place on the kitchen counter. Though heavy, I prefer it because it’s made of more durable and reliable materials. Machines that have more plastic parts will be considerably lighter.

Unit size: The unit itself is surprisingly compact and convenient. With a size of 11 x 10 x 13 inches, Breville Duo Temp Pro has a nice, average size, that will easily fit on any kitchen counter. This machine is easy to handle.

Water reservoir: Refilling was easy. The Breville Duo Temp Pro espresso maker comes with a removable 61oz water reservoir. It comes with the integrated water filtration. I was able to fill it out from the top, but I could also easily remove the reservoir by pulling it up.

Pressure / pressure gauge: Breville Duo Temp Pro is equipped with a 15 bar pressure pump. The machine works on a low pressure pre-infusion and on a 9 bar extraction pressure, which delivers rich and creamy coffee in every cup. The pre-infusion soaks the ground coffee and helps it expand for amazing espresso results. Unlike the Breville Infuser, this model does not have a pressure gauge.

Milk frother: The 360 degrees swivel action steam wand delivers beautiful, rich milk micro-foam that adds an extra layer of delicious taste to the coffee and that is also perfect for creating beautiful latte art. The brother also works as hot water dispenser.

Additional perks: I was so excited for Breville Duo Temp Pro espresso machine review. Just like other espresso makers by Breville, The Duo Temp Pro comes with some unparalleled features and specifications. They benefit consumers hugely./p>

Bottom line is the machine is very easy to use even for individuals with minimal knowledge of coffee brewing./p>

Perfect brewing temperature each and every time. Breville Duo Temp Pro comes with electronic PID temperature control. It regulates the temperature of the water going through the brew head for increased temperature stability. Therefore, it yields espresso shots of optimal quality.

Quickly heats water and maintains it at consistent temperatures. Thermocoil heating system circulates the water through a stainless steel coil coated with aluminum, which heats water on demand, for better temperature consistency and a more accurate control over water temperature.

Prevents burnt coffee when switching between steaming and brewing coffee. The auto purge function automatically adjusts the temperature of the water used for steaming milk and extracting espresso. Immediately after brewing, the machine will purge water into the drip tray. This ensures the thermocoil is at the optimal temperature. Also, after using the steam function, the machine will run cold water through the thermocoil in order to cool it down and prepare it for brewing the next cup of espresso at the optimal temperature.

Coffee tastes better with longer pre-infusion. Low pressure pre-infusion gradually increases water pressure to gently expand grinds for an even extraction before increasing to full pressure.

Milk froth and foam have nicer consistency. Commercial style 360 swivel action milk frothing wand capable of creating micro-foam milk texturing. The micro-foam captures the espresso and mixes with it for a smooth, velvety coffee drink.

Multi-function use for coffee and tea. In addition to brewing really tasty coffee, Breville Duo Tempo Pro also comes with a hot water dispenser. Therefore, I can brew espresso, latte, americano, hot chocolate in one machine. However, note that the steam and the hot water functions cannot be operated at the same time because the hot water is dispensed through the steaming wand.

An full exquisite coffee experience. Duo Temp Pro comes with a cup warming tray. It prepares the cup to be at optimal temperature before pouring coffee. A warm cup will keep the beverage hot for longer and will create a better drinking experience.

In addition, there are additional accessories that come with the machine:

  • The “Razor” dose trimming tool (patented twist blade trims down the puck to the right level for precision dosing and a consistent extraction)
  • 54 mm stainless steel portafilter
  • 1 cup and 2 cup single and dual wall filter baskets
  • cleaning tool
  • Allen key
  • integrated magnetic tamper
  • stainless steel milk jug
  • water filter
  • silicon cleaning disk
  • cleaning tablets

Breville Duo Temp Pro can set coffee lovers for success. I have indulged in delicious coffee for weeks on end. The water was hot enough to properly extract coffee grounds. Though cleaning can be time-consuming, I felt that it was still much faster than with other, more advanced espresso machines.

Brewing time: I felt Breville Duo Temp was among the top contenders for a brewing time. Breville Duo Temp does not have preset shots. It has given me the freedom to choose my own espresso volume. I had to turn the control dial to the “espresso” position to brew. As soon as I turned the dial to “stand,” the brewing ceased. Therefore, I was in charge of deciding how much coffee I wanted. Breville recommends an extraction of around 30 seconds.

Flavor: Breville promises precise coffee extraction which delivers rich, flavorful espresso. Breville Duo Temp Pro comes with a low pressure pre-infusion cycle that soaks the coffee grounds before brewing, which leads to an even extraction of the coffee flavors and components. I enjoyed coffee from Breville very much.

Temperature: Breville Duo Temp reached about 190F degrees, which is on par with the perfect brewing temperature. This machine comes with the digital temperature control (PID), which delivers water at precisely the right temperature, ensuring optimal espresso extraction. Digital temperature control (PID) technology detects and minimises any fluctuation during extraction, ensuring the temperature is kept at its optimum range, every time.

In addition, this machine is equipped with a stainless steel thermocoil heating system that heats water on demand and maintains the temperature of the water at a constant level.

Noise levels: When the machine creates steam, I could hear a pumping noise. Though the sounds released by the machine can be loud, I consider this normal in the operation of a 15 BAR Italian pump. The machine is not much different from others of this kind.

Cleaning: While cleaning may take a bit of time, reville Duo Temp Pro is still much easier and faster to clean than other, more advanced espresso makers. Cleaning is an inherent part of owning an espresso machine, and needs to happen in order to keep the machine in a great, functional condition.

I highly recommend wiping the machine with a damp cloth. It will be important to keep the body of the machine clean by wiping it with a wet cloth. I wash other parts of the machine, like the drip tray or like the water tank with soapy water.

I also recommended to periodically run water through the machine with the portafilter in place, but without any ground coffee, to rinse out any residual coffee particles.

Furthermore, Breville also recommends that a cleaning cycle should be done every 2-3 months using the cleaning tablets provided with the machine. On top of that, Breville recommends decalcifying the machine on a regular basis (every 2-3 months) using a mixture of white vinegar and water, to clean the mineral build up that has been caused by the use of hard water.

Customer-reported technical issues

This Breville Duo Temp Pro review comes after several weeks of testing the product. I have not experienced any major breakdowns while testing and using the product.

The vast majority of users seem to resonate my very positive experience with the machine. There are a couple of unhappy customers. Buyers mostly complained about two things:

  • the machine was too loud, especially while steaming,
  • the machine stopped brewing good coffee after a while, and that the espresso shots became watery and tasteless, and
  • the machine died after a few months.

However, we cannot be sure about whether and what exactly happened in those circumstances. There are many possibilities such as a) the coffee machines were not properly cared for or maintained, b) the units were flawed, c) there was a user error in using the machines.

I appreciate Breville’s attempts to eliminate plastic from the machine as much as possible. There still are some plastic parts that come in contact with hot water. Though they allegedly are BPA-free, I would love Breville to make more progress with eliminating plastic from their machines.

The Breville Duo Temp Pro has a solid stainless steel body with a few plastic parts (like the cup warmer on the top of the machine). There are plastic parts inside the coffee maker. The manufacturer claims that the machine is BPA free and that all the parts that come into contact with coffee and water are BPA free.

Whether it is BPA-free or not, this plastic comes into direct contact with scorching hot water. As you may know by now, I am personally very concerned about using products in which boiling water touches plastic.

The BPA-free status is helpful to know, but it typically does not guarantee that there are no other potentially dangerous substitutes used in the production process.

Reports show that many manufacturers replace BPA with other types of plastic. These types include but are not limited to BHPF (fluorene-9-bisphenol), TPP (triphenyl phosphate), and bisphenol S (BPS). The exact health effects of the BPA substitutes, such as BHPF, TPP and BPS, are unknown at this point.

Though expensive in a mid-$$$$$ price point, Breville Duo Temp Pro is of an extraordinary price-to-value ratio. It’s up to $100 less expensive from the Infuser (which has a few more features), but brews equally exquisite coffee. Breville Duo Temp Pro is a great choice for a long term investment, which can brew amazing coffee for many years.

The price of the Breville Duo Temp Pro appears to fluctuate quite a bit. At the time of publishing of this Breville Duo Temp Pro review, the machine was selling in a mid-$$$$$ price point, and was about $100 less expensive than Breville BES840XL the Infuser.

Though the product is undeniably expensive, we see it as a long-term investment. Unlike less expensive coffee makers, Breville Duo Temp Pro review should serve for many years to come. With its phenomenal feature set and technology, I am reassured of its ability to brew high end coffee every day.

Breville Duo Temp Pro is a bit more basic than the Breville Infuser. The Infuser has more features, such as auto-off, descale alert and default espresso shots. You will need to answer a question whether, and if so, how much more you are willing to pay for those additional features.

One is for sure, both Breville Duo Temp Pro and Breville Infuser come at an extraordinary price-to-value ratio. They have a proven track record in durability, high quality and exquisite coffee.

Should I buy Breville Duo Temp Pro? Owly’s verdict! 🔨

As I attempted to show in this Breville Duo Temp Pro review, this is a high-end espresso maker that can be extremely attractive for sophisticated coffee lovers. Though slightly more basic than the Breville Infuser (BES840XL), it typically costs less, while delivering the same high quality of coffee.

This espresso machine has a lot of attractive features, it promises to brew excellent espresso, cappuccinos, lattes and americanos. It has a great steaming wand capable of creating micro-foam, and it looks GREAT on the kitchen counter, too.
