Which method is the the best coffee brewing method? As I have traveled through different countries, I was inspired how each culture and each country developed their own unique, yet best way to brew coffee. People in Turkey love their Turkish coffee with a layer of “coffee mud” on the bottom of a cup. People in the Middle East love their ultra strong cup of coffee. People in Italy love their cappuccino and espresso. People in America love their.. Starubucks 😉 Now, for real. There are many amazing coffee brewing methods. We hope that our guide will allow you to choose the best way to brew your own coffee.

Which method is the best coffee brewing method?

Is there a way that we can objectively call the best way to brew coffee?

I think what we want to believe is the best coffee brewing method is extremely subjective, and largely depends on an individual taste. Not everyone likes their coffee strong… And there are many who would rather have in front of them a large mug of coffee, than a small espresso cup.

So, when it comes to “the best” brewing method, I don’t think there is one.

I do think, however, that coffee drinkers should try different methods and choose the one that fits their needs and expectations best. In this post, we will explore the best coffee brewing methods that people around the world enjoy every day:

Are certain coffees better with certain brew methods?

If you go to Italy, people will most likely tell you that espresso is the best way to prepare coffee. Meanwhile, if you go east towards Turkey, people will most likely agree that Turkish coffee is, in fact, the best coffee brewing method. In the good old United States of America, many people will have a strong preference for a “big cup of joe,” or a cup of Caffè Americano…

Individual tastes and preferences are greatly influenced by their culture, upbringing and what they have gotten used to. The best we can do, is to try many different coffee brewing methods and choose the one that appeals to us most.

Your Guide to the Best Way to Brew Coffee

→ Espresso brewing method

What is an Espresso way to brew coffee?

In my opinion, espresso is among the best coffee brewing methods. If you’d like to try brew your coffee as an espresso, here are a couple of things to keep in mind. Espresso machines brew espresso by pushing hot water through a ‘puck’ of coffee grounds, using a pressure of around 9 BARs. There are espresso makers that come with a diverse selection of BAR pressures, but anything above 15 BAR may be excessive (and too expensive).

As water is pushed through the coffee grounds, the oils and the other flavor compounds extract from coffee grounds.  The water carries these oils and flavors through the spout of the espresso machine into the cup.

Espresso is a short coffee drink that goes best in small shots of around 1 to 2 ounces. This is a coffee with strong and flavorful aroma, that is very much loved by those who like their coffee rich and creamy. One or two shots of espresso can be mixed with hot water or milk froth to make Americano, latte or cappuccino.

Best type of coffee that goes with Espresso

Espresso machines work best with a finer grind, but it is always good to read the instructions manual, and follow the recommendations of the manufacturer. A grinder makes an excellent pair with an espresso machine. Freshly ground coffee makes an espresso that is much more flavorful and creamy. So, if you have already spent an substantial amount of money on the espresso machine, it might be a good idea to invest in a good grinder to use an espresso machine at its full potential.

If you are looking for the best coffee to use in your espresso machine, two of the best known espresso coffee brands in the world are Lavazza and Illy. We particularly love Lavazza Super Crema Whole Bean Coffee Blend, or Illy Ground Espresso Coffee. Other good brand options are Kicking Horse and even Starbucks. With those, I discovered that espresso is among the best ways to brew coffee!

Perfect brewing temperature for Espresso brewing method

The best brewing temperature for espresso is between 195 and 205 F degrees. You are welcome to discover why 195 to 205 F degrees is a perfect temperature. The quality espresso machines available on the market will guarantee this temperature.

→ Drip coffee brewing method

What is a drip coffee way to brew coffee?

Drip coffee machines are extremely popular across the US. They can be easy to use and quite affordable. Some of the newer and better drip coffee machine models received interesting upgrades like cup size control, settings for different brew styles, and even milk frothing wands.

Drip coffee makers pull water from their water reservoirs (which users have to fill up first), and pass that water through a resistant heating element located at the bottom of the water tank. The water then passes through a filter filled with coffee grounds inside. As coffee grounds soak up with hot water, coffee compounds and oils get extracted, and then coffee is poured through the spout in a cup or a carafe.

Manufacturers of drip coffee makers usually advise against the use of fine coffee grounds. The reason is that fine ground clogs the permanent metal filter these machines usually come with. Therefore, it might be best to avoid fine ground with drip coffee.

What we have discovered is that a medium grind is the best for this type of brewers. We really enjoyed Peets Coffee Big Bang Medium Roast or La Colombe Corsica Blend. These types of coffee allowed me to see how drip coffee could be the best coffee brewing method.

Perfect brewing temperature for drip coffee brewing method

As usual, the best brewing temperature for this type of brewing method is between 195 and 205 F degrees. You are welcome to discover why 195 to 205 F degrees is a perfect temperature. However, not all drip coffee makers can heat up the water to that level. It is recommended to use a thermometer or a certified machine that has been recommended by the Specialty Coffee Association (SCAA).

→ Single serve brewing method

What is a single serve way to brew coffee?

Single serve is an interesting yet very simple coffee brewing method. Single serve can usually only serve one cup of coffee at a time.

These machines typically can use either aluminium cups (k-cups) or coffee pods (also called ‘coffee pads’). Those cups and pods contain some amount of coffee grounds with other ingredients (for flavoring). They have become very popular over the last few years.

Single serve coffee makers are quite straightforward. A cup (k-cup) or a pod is inserted in the coffee machine. The machine takes water from the reservoir and heats it up by passing through a heating element located at the bottom of the water reservoir. The aluminium cup is pierced through and its contents come in contact with hot water. The coffee is then poured through the spout into the cup. If the machine uses coffee pods instead of aluminium cups, then the thin filter paper the pods are covered with, allows the water to soak the coffee inside the pod, and coffee extraction takes place.

Many single serve coffee machines use aluminium cups (k-cups) or coffee pods. Some of the brands that are best known for making aluminium cups are Keurig and Nespresso. For coffee pods, we liked Jacobs Coffee Pads Cream Classic, or the Melitta Coffee Pods. However, some single serve machines can also brew ground coffee.

Please note that Keurig revolutionized single serve coffee brewing in many ways. They came up with the idea of k-cups, which are now an official trademark of Keurig. Not all k-cups may be compatible with Keurig machines. I’d recommend doing some research on k-cups and their compatibility with your single serve coffee machine.

Perfect brewing temperature for single serve brewing method

Although the agreed optimal temperature for brewing coffee among coffee connoisseurs is between 195 and 205 degrees F, manufacturers that produce single serve coffee machines seem to have their own opinion what the perfect brewing temperature should be. Keurig, for instance, claims that the temperature of the water inside their machines is about 192 F degrees. According to Keurig, this is the optimal temperature for brewing coffee.

→ Pour over brewing method

What is a pour over way to brew coffee?

The pour over method is very accessible and easy to use. This brewing method relies on brewing coffee through steeping. Coffee grounds extract oils, flavors and other solvents through immersion in hot water for a specific period of time.

Pour overs require a couple of accessories:

  • Coffee grounds (or if coffee grinds, also a grinder)
  • Coffee filters (metal, cloth or paper)
  • A measuring glass (to measure the water) and a measuring scoop (to measure the coffee)
  • A kettle/mug to boil water
  • A pour over cone
  • A cup or mug

To brew a cup of coffee, I need to fit the filter into the pour over cone, and place the cone over the cup or mug. I then have to put the ground coffee into the filter (around 1 tablespoon of coffee for every 4 ounces of water). The last step is to pour the water from the kettle over the coffee grounds in such a way that the grounds become completely soaked, and the nice, brown coffee liquid starts to slowly fill my cup.

Pour over is an amazing way to brew coffee. The best type of grounds for this coffee brewing method are medium-fine and medium grounds.

They allow fast extraction without clogging the metal filter (if you use one), while making a clear, ground free coffee liquid. We especially loved Bulletproof Coffee. A great choice for brewing pour over coffee on-the-go is the Tribo variety. It offers good coffee packaged in an innovative way, perfect for travelers.

Perfect brewing temperature for pour over brewing method

The optimal water temperature for brewing pour over coffee is 195 to 205 F degrees. We are using a gooseneck kettle with a temperature control. That way, we are able to ensure a proper temperature for brewing coffee.

→ French press brewing method

What is a French press way to brew coffee?

The French press is also pretty accessible and easy to use. In fact, it is my favorite method of brewing coffee.

Brewing coffee this way relies on brewing coffee through steeping and separating coffee grounds from water under some small pressure. Coffee grounds extract oils, flavors and other solvents through immersion in hot water for a specific period of time.

French press require a couple of accessories:

  • A tall cylindrical container called a “beaker”, and
  • a plunger with a lid and a metal filter attached to it.

The beaker is usually made of glass, but some models also use metal, plastic or ceramic. The beaker has a metal or plastic support with a handle. The metal filter is large enough that it fits the size of the beaker perfectly, in such a way that it can slide down without creating any spaces that coffee grounds could escape through. The lid fits on top of the beaker perfectly.

To brew coffee using a French Press, I have to boil water in a water heater or kettle, making sure that the water is at the optimum brewing temperature before I use it to make my coffee. In the meanwhile, I put coffee grounds in the beaker (some recommend a 1:12 coffee to water ratio). I then pour water over the coffee grounds, I stir to make sure that all the coffee grounds come in contact with the water, and I cover the beaker for around 3 minutes. After this steeping time, I press the plunger all the way down, allowing the filter to separate the coffee grounds from the liquid. And all I have to do then is to pour the coffee in my mug.

French Presses come in different sizes, so you can buy a small one to use for yourself, and a large one to brew for your whole group of friends.

We found that coarse and even grounds work best in a French Press. Finely ground coffee is not fit for the French Press, as it tends to escape through the metal mesh of the filter. Some coffee brands we love include: Bulletproof Coffee French Kick, Two Volcanoes Ground Coffee, and Death Wish Organic USDA Certified Whole Bean Coffee.

Perfect brewing temperature for French press brewing method

The perfect brewing temperature will be between 195 and 205 F degrees. To make sure that water reaches this temperature, we use an electric kettle with temperature control. Gooseneck kettles have been very successful for us!

→ Aeropress brewing method

What is an aeropress way to brew coffee?

The aeropress is a fairly new way to brew coffee, which involves some manual work.

Aeropress works similarly to French press with one small difference. In the end, when coffee grounds are separated from coffee-extracted water, an aeropress requires pushing the liquid through a filter cap into a mug. A French press, on the other hand, requires pushing coffee grounds to the bottom, and pouring coffee to a cup.

Brewing coffee this way relies on brewing coffee through steeping and separating coffee grounds from water under some small pressure.

When I buy an Aeropress, I get the following parts:

  • A measuring spoon
  • A stirrer
  • A filter holder with paper filters
  • A filter holder/cap
  • A brewing chamber
  • A plunger

Once the plunger and the brewing chamber (both cylindric in shape) have been assembled together (the plunger fits inside the brewing chamber perfectly), I need to put coffee grounds and hot water into a brewing chamber. I give them a stir, cover the brewing chamber with the cap that has a paper filter in it, and let the coffee and the water steep for a few seconds. I then have to turn the Aeropress upside down, place the filter holder over my mug, and press the plunger downwards. The pressure inside the brewing chamber forces the coffee out of the Aeropress through the filter cap and into the mug.

Best type of coffee that goes with aeropress

We have fond that just like with French press, Aeropress works best with coarse coffee grounds. Both Black Rifle Coffee Company and Zoka Coffee have great coffee varieties that would work well with the Aeropress.

Perfect brewing temperature for aeropress brewing method

The perfect brewing temperature will be between 195 and 205 F degrees. To make sure that water reaches this temperature, we use an electric kettle with temperature control. Gooseneck kettles have been very successful for us!
