Bottom line

The Keurig K-Classic coffee maker combines the well-known efficiency of the k-cup technology with some useful and and practical features. This results in a classic coffee machine that should not go out of style any time soon. Though the machine did not impress with a modern or innovative design in this Keurig K-Classic review, it did have all the basic and necessary features I might look for in a single serve machine. What is interesting about Keurig K-Classic is that it can brew more than just one cup of coffee. It brews 3 cup sizes: 6oz, 8oz and 10oz. Available on Amazon at a decent $$-price point.

A coffee maker with advanced features (such as temperature control or strength control)

Plastic-free machine

A machine that looks and feels sturdy, reliable and prestigious

Keurig K-Classic coffee maker looks awesome on the pictures. I thought the machine would look sleek, elegant and sturdy in my kitchen. Though the K-Classic looked classic and timeless, the plastic appeared rather cheap. The coffee maker was easy, convenient and mess-free. 4-button operation, a 48oz transparent water reservoir.

Keurig K-Classic coffee maker sells in a classic design in 2 colors: black and rhubarb. At the time of writing, only a black version was available on Amazon.

It seems like a rhubarb version is out of stock at a majority of online retailers. We will confirm why. Our first thought is that Keurig might have decided to discontinue a rhubarb model.

The machine comes with some basic features. It is extremely easy to use. I was able to remove the drip tray to accommodate a taller travel mug under the spout.

The control panel was located on the front top of the machine, and it was very intuitive. It comes with 5 buttons and 3 indicators that illuminate.

  • 3 button to choose the brew size
  • 1 button to manually turn the machine on/off
  • 1 button for auto off
  • 3 indicators that illuminate to signal 1) necessity to add water, 2) necessity to descale, and 3) water heating

The 48oz water reservoir was transparent. I found its location on the side of the machine to be great! I was able to remove it easily by lifting it and pulling it up. Interestingly, the machine did not start brewing if there was not enough water in the reservoir. This might have been an extra safety measure.

Keurig K-Classic coffee maker comes with some basic yet completely satisfying features: a removable drip tray, compatibility with a 7-inch mug, a large 48oz removable water reservoir, and auto-off. I wish there were strength control or temperature control.

Voltage: Keurig K-Classic coffee maker is made for 120V, and can be used in Canada and the US only.

Basket size: Keurig K-Classic works with k-cups coffee capsules, so it does not have a portafilter. I was able to use reusable My K-Cup to fill with ground coffee.

My K-Cup, however, appears to defeat the purpose of a single cup coffee machine. If I want to fill a container with ground coffee, I may as well invest in a different type of machine.

Beverage size: Keurig K-Classic can brew three different cup sizes: 6oz, 8oz and 10oz. I was able to select my desired cup size by pressing a corresponding button on the control panel. Each button is illuminated to minimize the error.

Weight: When I was preparing this Keurig K-Classic review, I was impressed how light the coffee maker was. It was about 10 pounds. Therefore, it was easy to lift and move around.

Unit size: The machine is rather tall (especially when the k-cup lid is open). It is 13.3 inches tall (or 17.6 inches when the coffee pod chamber is open), 10.1 inches wide and 13.2 inches deep. This coffee maker should be easy to fit in many kitchens, but may not fit under every cabinet due to its height.

Carafe: Keurig K-Classic does not come with a carafe. It is to be used with cups, mugs or travel mugs.

Water reservoir: The 48oz water reservoir was rather impressive. I was able to easily detach it to refill water. The water tank was on the left side of the machine. I liked its transparency. The Add Water indicator lights up on the control panel as soon as I had to refill water in the water reservoir.

Additional perks: I was so excited for this Keurig K-Classic review. Though this coffee maker is rather simple, it still has some awesome perks for a coffee lover like me:

Fewer trips to refill water with a large 48oz water reservoir. The water tank has a capacity of 48oz. It allowed me to brew more than 5 cups of coffee before I had to fill the reservoir with water again. The fact that I would not have to refill the tank very often not only saves time, but also simplifies the the morning routine a lot.

Saves energy and provides extra protection with auto-off. This feature is programmed to turn of the coffee maker automatically after it has been idle for 2 hours. This helps me save energy and, in consequence, it helps me save money too.

Brews various sizes for various days. This coffee machine brews multiple cup sizes: 6oz, 8oz, and 10oz. On some days, I enjoy having a smaller, but stronger cup of coffee. On those days, I go for 6oz for the strongest and richest brew. On other days, I am perfectly happy with a larger but less intense volume.

Mess-reducing spout and drip tray. The drip tray not only helps the cups to get closer to the pouring spout in order to avoid splashes, but it also catches lost coffee drops. Keurig K-Classic has a drip tray that can hold up to 8oz of liquid.

Compatible with a travel mug to enjoy coffee for longer. The drip tray is removable. This helps me place a travel mug up to 7.1 inches under the spout to pour more coffee to go.

Keurig K-Classic coffee maker brewed some good coffee. The brewing was quick and convenient. I wish there was an option to add boldness or control temperature. This would have added richness or depth to coffee.

Brewing time: I was positively surprised about the brewing time. It was rather fast. It took about a minute or so to brew a 6oz cup of coffee. As soon as I chose a desired cup size, the heating light came on. This announced the water heating. Once the light went off, the machine was ready to brew.

Flavor: Keurig K-Classic machine did not offer much flexibility in coffee brewing. I was limited to the selection of k-cups. However, overall, coffee was tasty, but lacked depth and richness I desired.

Temperature: Keurig K-Classic did not allow me to control the temperature of the brew. In my tests, the water reached about 175-180 F degrees, which is slightly below the perfect brewing temperature.

Noise levels: There were no remarkable noises coming from the machine. It performed similarly to others. There was a small winding noise, but this was nothing unusual.

Cleaning: I was really happy with how easy and convenient Keurig K-Classic was to clean. Some of its parts, such as the drip tray and the k-cup pod holder, were dishwasher safe. I felt it was necessary to regularly clean the body of the machine with a damp cloth or sponge. Keurig recommended that the interior of the machine should be descaled between 3-6 months, which is on par with our cleaning guidelines.

Customer-reported technical issues

This Keurig K-Classic review comes only a couple of weeks into the use. We have not experienced any negative issues with the coffee maker.

Keurig is one of the most beloved north American brands. Despite this, there are a few users who report their negative experiences with Keurig K-Classic:

  • the machine stopped working less than a year from purchase
  • does not brew correct quantity of coffee
  • clogged unit

We do not know whether these users have cleaned or used the coffee maker properly. However, it is entirely possible that there were some malfunctioning models. If your coffee maker stops working, we do recommend getting in touch with Keurig as soon as possible. Keurig might be able to replace a malfunctioning coffee maker either free or at a small fee.

Keurig claims that they utilize BPA-free materials in the manufacturing process. However, just like with other Keurig machines, I am disappointed that Keurig puts so much plastic in their coffee makers. Plus, I really dislike aluminium coffee pods.

I was somewhat sad about this coffee maker. As I was preparing the Keurig K-Classic review, I tried to research what the product is made of.

On one hand, Keurig claims that all the plastic its coffee machines and K-pods are made of, is FDA approved and BPA free, and hence, safe to use.

On the other, the practice showed me that Keurig K-Classic is made mostly with plastic (and, unfortunately cheaply-made plastic). Whether it is BPA-free or not, this plastic comes into direct contact with scorching hot water. As you may know by now, I am personally very concerned about using products in which boiling water touches plastic.

Further, there have been some health issues concern regarding the k-cups. Keurig has addressed these concerns by saying that their specifications require that k-cups pods be constructed from plastic which does not contain BPA or phthalates. They also added that the temperature of the water dispensed in Keurig brewers is well below the melting and softening points of the pod materials. What that means is that there should be no plastic leaches from the pod into the beverage.

The BPA-free status is helpful to know, but it typically does not guarantee that there are no other potentially dangerous substitutes used in the production process.

Reports show that many manufacturers replace BPA with other types of plastic. These types include but are not limited to BHPF (fluorene-9-bisphenol), TPP (triphenyl phosphate), and bisphenol S (BPS). The exact health effects of the BPA substitutes, such as BHPF, TPP and BPS, are unknown at this point.

Additionally, there are still concerns regarding the safety of single serve brewers, though, which are believed to be prone to growth of mold, algae, and bacteria.

Further, I strongly recommend that anyone who thinks about purchasing a machine that uses K-cups should first do a thorough research on the health and environmental concerns that have been associated with the use of K-cup brewers and coffee pods over the years.

Appears to be at a neat $$ price range. The price seems ok for a basic coffee maker in the Keurig portfolio. If you have a few more dollars, it might be worth investing in Keurig Duo or Keurig Duo Plus. Alternatively, a Hamilton Beach FlexBrew, which is a similar but less expensive version of Keurig Duo.

At present, Keurig K-Classic coffee maker sells at Amazon. The price tag is in the $$ price range, which appears to be neat for a coffee maker of this kind. It brews good coffee, comes with a classic design.

Keurig has very little competition in the single cup coffee maker space. Therefore, those k-cup compatible coffee makers typically cost more than coffee makers that brew from ground coffee.

Nevertheless, when buying a single serve machine like Keurig or  Nespresso machine, it is important to account for the cost of coffee pods. Coffee pods are typically more expensive than ground coffee. And, the more coffee I drink each day, the more this amount increases.

Should I buy Keurig K-Classic coffee maker? Owly’s verdict! 🔨

As I attempted to show in this Keurig K-Classic coffee maker review, this is basic yet satisfying coffee maker compatible with k-cups. It might be really attractive for some consumers who love coffee quickly and conveniently.

If you are someone who enjoys Keurig machines, then Keurig K-Classic might be a good choice for you due to its simplicity and practical design. Keurig K-Classic is also a great starter coffee maker for those who want to explore coffee brewing (or just dip their toes with coffee pods).

Personally, I feel okay about the price of this coffee maker (on Amazon, it sells in the $$-price range). Though this is more expensive than some of the more advanced coffee makers, I feel that the brand stands for a lot here.
